Responsibilities of the County Attorney:

Phillip Hedrick County AttorneyThe County Attorney's office performs many services and duties including the prosecution of all violations of criminal law within the jurisdiction of the District Court: These include all misdemeanors, such as DUI offenses, other traffic violations, assault, theft of less than $300.00, public intoxication, etc.

County attorneys have prosecutorial jurisdiction over juvenile issues, which include criminal acts, truancy, dependency, neglect, and abuse of children. The County Attorney also handles some extraditions from other states, and oversees mental commitments and disability cases.

In addition to these prosecutorial duties, county attorneys serve as counsel to their respective fiscal courts, taxing districts, commissions, boards, and other county officials in all legal issues. If a county government or agency is sued, the County Attorney advises elected officials and defends the county's position in court. The County Attorney also collects delinquent taxes.

Although the County Attorney position is part-time according to Kentucky law, these many duties dictate that Boyd County Attorney Phil Hedrick dedicates full-time to this position having few, if any, private cases or clients.
